I have been doodling with letters since the 2nd grade at Our lady Queen of Martyrs grade school. I hadn’t learned to read as quickly as my classmates so I would doodle to pass the time. For some reason, letters have always fascinated me.

I was exposed to monograms also at a young age and being a curious kid, I did some investigation about their historical significance.

This mainly was initiated by a conversation with my mother about her monogrammed china, silver, linens, and literally every wedding gift she and my father received. she told me she couldn’t get a monogram until she married. Prior to that she just used a single C.

My first professional monogram came about from a gay couple, friends of mine who were getting married and not taking each other’s last name, so the monogram needed 4 letters (not traditional). Over the years I have also had clients who maintained their maiden names for one reason or another, so I typically incorporate that into my art.

I am excited to take monogramming into the 22nd century and shedding the misogyny and prideful associations from the past. They represent a quiet identification of who we are and where we put our pride and it’s personal and subtle.

Since the first paid monogram we have created hundreds and they have been used for a plethora of applications: tattoos, doormats, slippers, belt buckles, earrings, and embroidery of all kinds.

I love doing it and it’s a one-of-a-kind gift idea especially for the couple who really don’t need any more “things”.
